Facts and Legends about Gemstones

September 1st, 2009

It is common to see every guest especially the ladies in different social gathering wearing jewelries. These jewelries make anyone who wears them feel more confident about themselves especially if the gemstones that make up their jewellery are priced at a high value. But aside from the enticing look of those gems in every piece of jewelry, the myths and facts about them likewise made them more interesting.

Over the years, gemstones have also been called precious or semi-precious stones. They are taken or mined from the bottom of the Earth and after that, they would undergo specific treatment. After giving the gem the final cut, it is now ready to be sold out.

The value of gemstones is measured according to their various features and treatment procedure. Moreover, each gem is determined by their chemical composition and is also grouped according to their specie. Quartz and beryl are among the typical species of gems.

Different gemstones have different color. They also vary in their cut, carat, and clarity. These things as well as the gem’s rarity are the usual basis in determining the value and price of a gem. A gem which is not commonly mined can be costly. A diamond’s price on the other hand depends on its cut.

The color as well as the asteria or the star-like effects that you will notice in a gem makes the gem attractive to the eyes. It undergoes treatment such as by using heat, radiation, waxing or oiling, and fracture filling. After the treatment and after a gem receives its final cut, a gem is ready to be out in the market.

Some of the known gemstones are listed below:

Amethyst

Belongs to the specie of quartz, this gem is claimed to be the stone of a royal family. Its color can sometimes be rich purple, lilac, as well as the other related shade. Moreover, amethyst is also believed to help someone overcome his or her sickness like headache and other pains as well.

Aquamarine

This stone is commonly seen in the shade of blue or green and belongs to the specie of beryl. People in Russia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and other counties in different continents are lucky for being able to mine this precious gem.

Garnet

Garnet derived its name from a Latin word which means pomegranate. Pomegranate’s red fruit is what inspires the people to give garnet its name.

The number of gemstones is not only limited to the number of birthstones we know. There are still other precious stones out there and gemologists would continue to identify and enhance them.

Nothing beats the experience of bringing out the beauty hidden inside a rock. However, the high cost of lapidary equipment can keep many people from being able to enjoy this experience. Two solutions worth considering are – joining a local lapidary club and/or purchasing used lapidary equipment.

Joining a lapidary club has many benefits and a few downsides. By joining a lapidary club, depending on the quality of the club, you can have access to some high end lapidary equipment. You typically will not be personally responsible for maintaining the equipment and your only out of pocket expense will likely be your membership and shop fees. You also get to enjoy the social interaction and support you receive from the other members of the club.

There can be drawbacks to club membership however. One such drawback is the time in which you will have access to the lapidary equipment. Most clubs will not provide 24/7 access so you will be at the mercy of the equipment schedule and the competition from other club members.

To avoid some of the pitfalls of joining a lapidary club, many are turning to the solution of purchasing their own used lapidary equipment.

Owning your own used lapidary equipment will give you the freedom to work on your own schedule. If you wake up in the middle of the night and want to practice your craft, you will not have any competition for using the equipment.

You also benefit from not having to haul all the material youre working on to a remote location to practice your craft. By owning used lapidary equipment you have the luxury of setting up your own work environment. You can organize your material and your work flow so that it works best for you.

If you’re the kind of lapidary artist who would prefer to practice and create your art without the input from well meaning onlookers, then owning your own used lapidary equipment is a must. You get to enjoy the privacy afforded to you by your own home.

So, no longer should the high cost of new lapidary equipment keep you from enjoying this wonderful craft/art form. Two options have been presented in this article that can save you money and still allow you to participate in joy of lapidary. You get to choose which one best suites you.

If youre okay with having limited access to the tools you need then joining a lapidary club may be just the thing for you. If, on the other hand, you would like to have some control over your environment and have the freedom to work when you want and how you want, then you should consider used lapidary equipment.

Tiffany & Co. was founded upon the desire to provide extravagent goods to those seeking quality and luxury, and Tiffany has done just that. It has a line of products to include beautiful jewelry, diamonds, silver gifts and house wares among other quality goods appealing to customers as the company has since its inception.

John Young and Charles Lewis Tiffany (known as the King of Diamonds) founded Tiffany & Young in 1837 and later changed to Tiffany & Co. when Charles Tiffany took over. The company originally opened as a stationary and fancy good emporium in New York City but now offers a wide array of quality goods including its popular Tiffany jewelry.

The silver jewelry pieces from this early time period are beyond beautiful as they are timeless in artisanship. In fact, vintage jewelry, including bracelets and engagement rings remains popular among consumers. You can still find many antique pieces in the original light blue boxes, and this light blue color remains the packaging choice for the company.

Items that could be purchased at Tiffany & Co. during this earlier era include silver jewelry, silver cups and saucers, monogrammed dresser sets, presentation bowls, games, silver trays for calling cards and men’s dressing sets. The souvenir spoons made by Tiffany & Co. and other manufacturers were very popular during the late 1800s.

The art jewelry section of Tiffany & Co. was created in 1902 for the original purpose of displaying the jewelry and enamel art of Louis Comfort Tiffany, a son of Charles Tiffany. It is Louis Tiffany who created some of the famous Tiffany products, including the stained glass lamp shades, which portray the artisanship and design for which Tiffany & Co. is reputed.

Tiffany & Co. moved to Manhattan on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in 1940 where it still stands today. The name Tiffany & Co. has become known for its realizable elegance and luxury in its fine goods whether it is diamonds, jewelry or many other gifts and fine Tiffany goods.

From its inception to its now established reputation for quality, extravagant goods, Tiffany & Co. continues to present the most luxurious jewelry and goods that consumers expect from Tiffany products. With its innovative yet classic jewelry designs to the fine silver items, there is certainly the right gift for the special person in your life.

With such a wide selection of jewelry and other elegant goods, shopping for holidays and special occasions should no longer be such a challenge with the ability to find and purchase Tiffany products either in one of its stores or online.

If you are in the market for gemstone jewelry, you are in for a treat. There are so many gorgeous pieces available your only problem will be choosing which one to buy. It is easy to find a piece to suit any occasion or purpose as you can find something in almost any color or shade. You will love wearing gemstone jewelry for formal or informal affairs and there is something to fit every budget.

Colorful gemstones are extremely versatile that the problem will not be finding the one you want but making a choice between several that you would love to have. Diamonds are lovely but they do not offer the versatility of gemstones which are considerably cheaper. Precious and semiprecious stones, such as sapphires, rubies and emeralds are sought after gemstones with a respected reputation. They are available in many different settings at a variety of prices.

Sapphire, the birthstone for people born in September, is second only to diamonds in hardness. The deep blue of this gemstone is a popular choice for rings. It is available in lighter shades if that is what you prefer.

Rubies have long been the gemstone representing love and passion. Emperors and kings the world over have coveted these beautiful gems for their beauty scarcity and they have been worn by royalty for centuries. Given as a token of love, rubies are also the birthstone for those born in July. These rich red gemstones are also hard and rank high on the Mohs scale which is the scale used to measure the hardness of a mineral.

Emerald rings in a gorgeous, deep green color are some of the most costly of all the colored gemstones, however, emeralds created in a lab rather than by nature can be considerably less expensive if price is a concern. For natural emeralds, the deeper and greener the stone the higher its value will be.

In regards to the ever important matter of the stone’s actual cut, gemstone jewelry can be found in a wide variety of differing cuts, each used to accentuate the stone’s natural brilliance in some way. Brilliant-cut is one of the most popular for larger stones and allows the maximum amount of light to pass through and be reflected back out. Brilliant cuts can be used for round, oval, marquise, even pear shaped stones. Other popular cuts for gemstone jewelry include princess, heart, emerald, radiant, and trillion.

Gemstone rings are available either as a solitary stone or a cluster with other similar or complimentary stones. Whatever your taste or desire, there is a combination of stones that you will love and treasure for a lifetime.

Take your time to find just the right piece of gemstone jewelry. Be sure and learn the best methods of caring for your new jewelry. Gem stones are durable and don’t need a whole lot of attention, but cleaning them regularly will allow them to show off their spectacular beauty every time you wear them.

When you are cleaning your gemstone ring, be very careful not to do so over a sink drain. Rings can so easily slip from our hands and down the drain. Use bowl instead.

Cameos come in two forms and kinds. The shell cameo and the gemstone cameo. The shell cameo is carved in Italy in the small town of Torre del Greco. This town has been known for its shell cameo carving for centuries, and has produced the most beautiful shell cameos in existence. The agate cameo is carved in Germany, also in a very small town named Idar-Oberstein. Several of the gemstone itself is found in and around this German town.
Both shell and gemstone cameos are of high value and praised by collectors and investors. Both kinds of cameos are also praised by cameo lovers who just like to wear them as a piece of jewelry. Whatever cameo you may choose, the stone cameo or the shell cameo will give you a great piece of jewelry as well as a great investment.
One of the two cameos, however, is more durable and more expensive than the other. I am referring to the gemstone cameo, also called the hardstone cameo. Most hardstone cameos are made of what is called opaque stones such as: agate, carnelian and onyx. This article will concentrate on the agate cameo.
Agate is the most popular of the gemstones for carving cameos. The name agate comes from the River Achates, found in Sicily, but it is also found in Brazil and in Germany in the region where it is carved today, Idar-Oberstein. Agate surpasses the hardness of steel which makes its durability a perfect material for cameos and therefore make an excellent investment for cameo investors.
Because of its extremely hard core, the agate stone cameo is mostly carved ultrasonically. How is that possible to carved work of art with a computed machine? The computer for ultrasonic carving is programmed from an original gemstone hand-carved master work. Only a close look by a cameo expert can tell you if your agate cameo was carved by hand or ultrasonically. Are ultrasonically carved cameos of let value? No, there are not. The cameo carved by ultra-sounds is still carved from a handmade master piece, and the stone that it is made of is still a precious stone.
Hand carved agate cameo is a very tough job in every sense of the term, because of the very hard consistence of gemstone such as the agate stone. When it is carved by hand, however it is done with dental tools which allow minute precisions and details.
Carved by hand or by ultra-sounds, the agate cameo is a beautiful work of art appreciated by all cameo collectors and anyone wanting to own a valuable piece of jewelry that will last forever.
